The difference lies in the backing. While standard iron-on patches often peel after a few washes, our custom iron-on patches utilize a commercial-grade polyamide (PA) heat seal. When applied correctly, this adhesive forms a molecular bond with the fabric fibers, ensuring your branding stays secure through repeated wear and washing cycles.

Iron-on is a popular application method for patches. The iron-on application method is available for all the types of patches we offer: printed patches, woven patches, and embroidered patches. Whether you are launching a streetwear drop, outfitting a team, or adding a logo to tote bags, you get the look of direct embroidery with the flexibility of a heat press application.

1. The Adhesive Layer (Heat Seal)

We use a specific high-melt adhesive designed for durability and flexibility. Unlike stiff glues that crack, our backing moves with the fabric.

• It’s the best choice for: Cotton, Denim, Canvas, Polyester blends.
• Avoid iron-on patches when applying to the following fabrics: Nylon, Rayon, Waterproof Rainwear (DWR coated), and Leather. For these applications, we recommend our sew-on patches.

The border determines the lifespan and style of your patch. We offer two different borders (called Edge Finishing).

• Merrowed Border (Overlock): A thick, wrap-around stitched edge. This is the industry standard for uniform patches and simple shapes (circles, shields). It prevents fraying and offers a classic "varsity" look.
• Laser Cut (No Edge): For intricate custom shapes and complex logos. A precision laser cuts the fabric and seals the edges instantly. This allows for a flatter profile, ideal for modern fashion branding.

When ordering your custom iron-on patches, you can choose between two shapes:

• Standard Shape: Shapes like a Round, Square, and Triangle.
• Other Shape: Custom shapes based on the design of your iron-on patch. Please note that iron-on patches always need a merrow edge which is about 3 mm thick. Unfortunately, shapes with very small angles or small dents are therefore not possible.

We offer several types of patches that can be produced with an iron-on backing, including woven patches, embroidered patches, and printed patches. Choosing the right type depends on your design and how the patch will be used. The biggest differences are between custom made embroidered patches iron-on and printed iron on patches, as each works best for different styles and levels of detail. 

Embroidered iron on patches:

• Feature raised stitching for a textured, traditional look
• Are ideal for bold logos and classic styles
• Offer rich thread colors and strong visual impact

Printed iron on patches:

• Are flat with a smooth surface, allowing photo-like detail
• Are better for designs with gradients or small text
• Provide high-resolution visuals with no thread limitations

Still unsure? Woven patches offer a great middle ground and are ideal for small text and clean graphics.

Achieving a permanent bond requires the right combination of Heat, Pressure, and Time.

The "Golden Rule" of Adhesion: The glue must liquify to penetrate the fabric fibers, and then cool down completely under pressure to lock in place.

• Prep: Ensure the garment is clean and dry. Preheat the area with your iron for 5 seconds to remove moisture.
• Position: Place the patch adhesive-side down. Cover with a pressing cloth or parchment paper (Teflon sheet).
• Heat: Press down firmly (do not slide the iron). Hold for the recommended time.
• Secure: Turn the garment inside out and iron the back of the patch area for another 20 seconds. This draws the glue into the fabric.
• The Cooling Phase: Crucial! Let the garment cool completely flat for at least 5 minutes. Do not test the edges while warm.

When applying patches to thicker or textured fabrics like fleece or canvas, extra care helps ensure a secure bond:

• Use firm pressure but keep the heat below 320°F/160°C to avoid melting the fabric pile. Use a thin pressing cloth to protect the texture.
• Extend the ironing time by 20 seconds.
• Always test on a small area first if the fabric is delicate.
• For curved surfaces like hats, use a specialized heat press or hand-press for precision

Our custom hat patches are specifically designed to work well with these types of materials.

When applied correctly, custom iron on patches can withstand regular washing and wear. To ensure long-lasting adhesion:

• Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash
• Wash garments inside-out in cold or warm water
• Air dry when possible, or tumble dry on low
• Avoid using bleach or strong detergents

For heavy-use items or professional uniforms, consider adding a few (hand) stitches for extra security, or opt for sew on patches.

When applied correctly to cotton or denim using our commercial heat seal, they are considered permanent and machine washable. However, for heavy-duty workwear (like Carhartt jackets) or items washed daily in hot water, we recommend adding a few stitches to the corners for absolute security.

Iron-on patches use heat-activated glue and are easy to apply with an iron. Sew on patches are stitched onto fabric and offer the strongest, most permanent hold. Both are available at Dutch Label Shop.

Iron-on embroidered patches are actual physical patches with thread and texture. Heat Transfers (DTF) are ink printed directly onto the fabric. Iron-on patches offer a much higher perceived value and a premium "3D" look compared to flat printing.

Iron-on patches are particularly well-suited for smooth fabrics such as cotton, denim, linen and canvas, which can withstand the high heat required for proper adhesion. Avoid applying iron-on patches to leather, nylon, or velvet, as heat may damage these materials and prevent the patch from sticking.
